POR FALAR EM BRASIL
Music is a religion to baianos, and everywhere one goes around the town of Salvador da Bahía, songs, rhythms, sounds, voices... seem to have the power of shaping everyday life, organizing time, offering courage, healing with peace: from the street vendor selling acarajé to the office executive escaping the boredom of a dead-end job. Music, perhaps more than other artistic expressions, offers a rich view into tradition, language and history but also a peek into the future. Brazilians may see it as entertainment but there's also a mission in their zealous fervor, in the way they sing or talk about music. A taxi driver in Salvador once told me: «[Music here] is the noble face of heavenly poetry singing the phrases of itself.» I can not agree more, for the lines between music popular and high art in Brazil are blurred.
