BMM gets a great deal of visitors, but we want to encourage people to become readers with an attitude. After all, we write so you can chop our balls. The blog is not only about music or the arts, but about anything and everything. (Which is why we add the «moods» tag.) But BMM is, mostly, about criticism. We write with an edge. And we intend to keep it that way. Criticism is last the frontier of those who hate the bullshit of publicity.

We are running new pieces while migrating old posts to a new platform. (Feel free to visit the archives.) More readers have subscribed to our updates, a much better alternative, we think, to read our blues. Again, thanks for visiting.

Finding that music of any language is never an easy task. Take Gilberto Gil's tribute to Bob Marley, «Kaya N'gan Daya.» It is probably the most boring, obnoxious and train-wreached album of Gil, who had the audacity of thinking he could show Jamaicans something about swinging reggae, and ended up being the laughingstock of both Jamaicans and Brazilians. Mainly because he insisted on singing in English, making Jamaican inflections a caricature. But also because he really didn't add anything new to a music that's great as it is. [–]

MORDIENDO LA MANZANA

En clave de improvisación

Si como nos enseña la historia de la planificación urbanística y la arquitectura, las ciudades son lentas construcciones de conveniencias (malas o buenas), adaptaciones geográficas (malas o buenas), políticas (malas o buenas), administración (mala o buena) y sentido de élite (aquí ponga lo que quiera), Nueva York es un experimento en constante evolución hacia el caos disciplinado. No hay otra manera de escribirlo, puesto que la ciudad nace y muere en una constante renovación determinada por las personas que llegan y se van, por las generaciones que crecen con una visión diferente. En palabras del arquitecto Lee Jablin: «Nueva York nace constantemente en una suerte de improvisación fundamentada en la precisión». [–]

Comer y follar

En principio acudo a los buenos restaurantes como otros a un concierto, a una obra de teatro o a un museo. La experiencia incide en los sentidos, que han de transformarse al quedar recompensados por la paciencia, la morosidad, la observación de los detalles. Lo mismo que en el sexo, procuro comer despacio, deleitándome en un ritual en el que cada bocado se convierte en una deliciosa emoción. Un ars poético. La boca como metáfora de las sucesivas penetraciones que nos dejarán para la posteridad un manojo de recuerdos. Lo sabrá bien mi compañero que, ay, debió desterrar eso de que la comida «es energía y no un placer». No tengo que decir que mi cuca se impuso con su propia lógica. [–]

La crítica como espinilla en el culo

Nueva York se proyecta al mundo como la capital donde todas las cosas pasan: los grandes éxitos editoriales, las grandes puestas escénicas, las grandes voces del jazz. Es decir, una ciudad entregada a la cultura y al arte. Pero ocurre que aquí, muchos individuos, en apariencia inteligentes, acuden a la rabieta infantil cuando se les dice que en la ciudad también hay mucha mierda, que no se le da prensa a ciertas músicas o que lo que se toca en ciertos lugares no es jazz (sólo para poner algunos ejemplos). Lo sé, porque por estos días he preferido poner distancia de dos personas ideológicamente en las antípodas, pero igualmente imbélices. [–]

Gretchen Parlato y la lengua portuguesa

La lengua portuguesa es música antes que sistema lingüístico. Eso seguramente lo aprendieron los bahianos de Camões y Unamuno, pero lo padecieron gracias al rigor y celo de una lingüista autodidacta que no sólo tenía cojonudos ovarios sino un par de güevas mayúsculas. Tenía nombre de princesa, Candolina Rosa de Carvalho Cerqueira, pero era una negra que se había criado en los peores sectores de Salvador da Bahía.
