I would gladly join the cheerleaders of the media and the music industry if I didn't have zillions of questions about this sale increase. For starters, who are still buying albums? Music On The Tube
When there's an increase in sales of, say, jazz or classical music albums, this information is buried in the last pages of many publications. Yeah, «The New York Times» may run it prominently in their blogs, but it is usually with two graphs max. No fuss. No buzz. And we're talking about a publication that has a cultural section devoted mostly, if not entirely, to jazz, classical and rock (concert reviews mostly). I have the feeling that if commercial pop bullshit was selling, major news outlets would be going abuzz. [–]

Claro que para apreciar estas cosas, ayuda tener una gran ventana, deprovista de cortinas o percianas, dispuesta a dar testimonio de cada momento de mis días en conexion con el espectáculo que se entrega a mis ojos. La idolatría, claro, lo llevó a imitar lo bueno y lo malo, incluyendo la dura vida vivida en las drogas. Albany no era el primero. El saxo alto Frank Morgan mantuvo también una relación similar con Parker. Morgan, de hecho, me contó en Miami, cuando se presentó en el Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club, que tras tocar con Albany y Parker en varios lugares de Kansas City, se perdió una semana con el par en lo que recuerda como un desbocado viaje al infierno. «After that, I would say I lived again a couple of times.» [–]

La canción del orfebre
Sí, se me dirá que al fin y al cabo se trata de vender, porque hay que pagar las cuentas, porque la tarjeta de crédito está al máximo. Y yo no les voy a quitar la razón. Pero ya ni siquiera es posible hablar de una banalización. La banalización al menos tiene un sustrato. Algo. En cambio lo que se hace hoy con la canción es un descaro. Y el descaro va como sigue: peguemos para ganar mucha plata, así compramos una casa en Key Biscayne y de lo demás ya se encargarán los publicistas analfabetos; ellos conseguirán que se nos trate como artistas. (¿Verdad, Ricky?) Lo que explica que muchos llamados «artistas» te hablen como si te vendieran una licuadora, una alfombra, un tratamiento para la calvicie. [–]

Algo sobre un oficio
Lo curioso es que muchos —artistas profesionales, novatos inocentes, descarados diplomados— lo negarán tantas veces como Judas. A los músicos que conozco les parece aberrante hablar de hacer música para ganar plata. Tienen claro, desde luego, que nadie vive del arte. Pero cuando hablan, parecen vivir agarrados de una utopía. El problema es que lo que producen trasparenta su esencia: una intención mercantilista. Y por eso la obra está al servicio de un propósito: forrarse los bolsillos haciendo música banal e insustancial. Faltan los riesgos. Sobran las fórmulas. [–]

La larga mano de Castro
Alguien que en su site coloca una biografía por demás superlativa y luego se sienta a redactar este texto, usando expresiones del tipo «la artista ya posee todas las características vocales de una cantante establecida», «...ha sido toda una sensación por su impactante interpretación y musicalización», «Ayala es un caso especial. Puede considerársele la nueva revelación de la industria discográfica, tanto por su capacidad como cantante, como por su conocimiento musical. No es frecuente encontrar jóvenes con el caudal interpretativo que ella posee. Sabe cantar y emocionar, y no pertenece a los conocidos “productos de laboratorio” que en los últimos años han enturbiado el sonido internacional de la música popular hispanoamericana», no puede tener intenciones de mentir, sino de joder. No insulta la inteligencia, de veras, pero sí el decoro. Incluso el mínimo decoro y sentido común de esos redactores de prensa que son más farándula que la misma farándula. [–]

Los orgasmos de la música
Casi todos los pintores que conozco son grandes conocedores de música; y lo son, creo, porque en sus obras se revelan unos ritmos, unas armonías, el misterioso atractivo de una melodía. Uno de esos pintores fue mi amante cuando yo tenía 17 años y buscaba pasar del dibujo a la acuarela. Era un venezolano que se había afincado en Medellín y vivía en una casa que para mí sirvió de escuela en muchos sentidos, no sólo porque allí aprendí que el manejo de los colores no alcanza a ser arte sin antes pasar por un suplicio agónico, sino porque pocas cosas estimulan tanto el sexo como la música. «Cheo» is one of the greatest words in the Spanish language. It was invented by the Cubans, and if you look around on Facebook, you'll see «cheos» like troops in the Afghanistan. Have a friend who goes on vacation and decides to uploads photos having breakfast, playing the maracas, pointing at the neon sign of the hotel he's not staying at? That's a «cheo.» Are Cubans exempt from being cheo? Por tu madre, NO! They invented the word, and they offer the most beautiful examples of «cheoism.» In fact, Miami is overpopulated by «cheos»! Some of them are great musicians and some are not. Some are not even musicians, but they have the money to tell others what music should and must be produced, or how it should and must sound for gringos to say, «Hey, caliente!,» «Rumba!,» «Vida loca!,» «Mamacita,!» «Feeling hot, hot, hot!» [–]

Decálogo del que escucha música en Nueva York
He aquí lo que descubrirás si de veras eres curioso, exigente y exquisito: hay música extraordinaria, alucinante, transformadora... en esta ciudad —¿quién puede ponerlo en duda?—, pero también hay muchísima mierda; mucha más de lo que una ciudad como esta vive como categoria cultural.
